Elizabeth

Elizabeth was sitting on the couch in the drawing room, downstairs for her few hours of sunlight and to interact with the rest of the household. It did not take long for her to grow mad from boredom in the bedroom, where she could not see or speak to anyone unless they came to visit. She was reading a book that Will brought her home from the book merchant and sipping tea when there was a furious knock on the front door. A moment passed and no one arrived from the household to answer it, so she was forced to call out for help.

“Fitzwilliam! Mrs. Reynolds! Sherman!”

No one answered.

“Sarah! Mrs. Macht!” she called out to her handmaiden and the cook. But it seemed as if no one was close enough to hear the knock on the door.

Begrudgingly, Elizabeth got up and walked slowly and awkwardly to the door. Every step made her want to lay down and take a nap, so by the time she got to the door, she was not in a terribly pleasant mood. That mood did not improve when she swung the door open and saw Anne de Bourgh on her doorstep.

Elizabeth gasped.

“What are you doing here?!” they shouted at each other in unison. Elizabeth placed herself between Anne and the crack of the open door.

“What are you doing at my doorstep?”

Elizabeth was trying to appear intimidating but she knew she probably appeared silly given she was massive and barely able to remain on her feet. Anne glared at her pregnant stomach and stiffened her posture. For a moment, she looked exactly like her mother.

“I am here to speak to Fitzwilliam. Go fetch him at once.”

Elizabeth furrowed her brow.

“Excuse me?”

Elizabeth could not believe she was talking to her like she was the help. She was just about to lose control of her temper when she suddenly heard the sound of small feet charging up behind her.

“Mrs. Darcy, you must return to the drawing room at once! Dr. Lightner said you need to stay off your feet!” Mrs. Reynolds turned and glared at Anne. “YOU will stay there until I can find the master! Do not step foot in this house!”

Then she slammed the door in Anne’s face. Elizabeth burst out laughing as she sank back on the couch.

“Mrs. Reynolds, I have never heard you shout at anyone before. It was most surprising.”

The housekeeper huffed in frustration.

“I am very sorry, Mrs. Darcy. But that woman should not have spoken to you in such a way. And certainly not in your condition. She can wait outside until I am able to find Mr. Darcy.”

Mrs. Reynolds stalked off in search of Fitzwilliam, leaving Elizabeth alone in the drawing room. She carefully peeked around the curtains and saw Anne stomping around and muttering to herself on the front step. She wished Will was there to laugh with her because Miss de Bourgh was making quite the scene and it was drawing the attention of the whole outdoor staff. It took at least ten minutes for Mrs.
